The Book, “It’s Your Choice” is all about making personal choices. But what about Societal Choices and their impact? From my perspective, we in the United States continue to “dumb down” and either make poor choices or no choices at all! We are manipulated on a massive scale and we need to change that or we face a grim future.
The first thing that strikes me is how poorly we communicate. This seems to be either a reflection of our educational systems or the excessive distractions we accept as normal. Maybe both and more. We don’t use words correctly but, hey, we know what they mean, right? Do we? We hear newscasters using poor grammar and editorializing more than reporting. That means they often portray how we should feel about an issue rather than reporting facts and letting us draw our own conclusions.
I remember when tests, almost any kind of test, became too hard and our failure rates were falling compared to other countries. So instead of working at a solution to better prepare, we made the tests easier. That’s dumbing down. Think about it. You are likely to get a nurse who can’t spell or can’t articulate properly in your chart. Oh well, mistakes happen, right? (Not picking on nurses – could be any profession.)
Now we have become so accustomed to being fed simplistic (often biased or just flat our wrong) information AND we’re told how to react to it. To me that’s just taking the individual (that’s you or me) out of the equation. We don’t process information as we should. We just react to what is presented to us.
Of course, this doesn’t apply to everyone. My fear though is that it applies to too many of us in our Society. We don’t read the text of speeches or laws in detail. Instead we react to the latest sound bite. It seems nobody is ever really accountable! There is so much misinformation out there coming at us from so many sources that it is, I have to admit, overwhelming. You have to really dig to get information that will allow you to make an informed decision.
Given all the above, what kind of future do we face? Heck, what kind of present do we live in? I believe the answer to that is that those in power increase their power and influence at the expense of those on the bottom rungs of our Society. That’s another way of saying the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. And isn’t that what we are seeing? Look around. General prosperity is declining, our middle class is eroding, we seem to be in a constant state of war, there are more homeless than ever, and yet the Dow is growing at an unprecedented rate. Who is gaining? What are you doing about it?
As we seek more and more entertainment we lose more and more control of our future. We are losing it so slowly we don’t even tend to notice it. We can change our future but we must first give up some of those things that take our time and our ability to research, learn, and think for ourselves.
