Ever make a really dumb choice? Well, yeah! Most people have/do.
So what? Well, as long as you don’t kill yourself or somebody else, at least you made a choice. Good for you!
Imagine the alternative. Or maybe you’re living the alternative? That is, not making any real choices in your life. To me, that’s kind of like standing in a cesspool hoping the smell will go away.
Here’s the reality: People get stuck. They get stuck in the past. They get stuck in “what if” or “coulda, wouda, shouda.” The fact is their stuck. STUCK in time. STUCK in their minds and relationships. STUCK!!
Recently met a retired Vietnam Vet; a B-52 pilot who flew a lot of missions over Vietnam and built a pretty interesting career in the Air Force and then Civil Service. Invented some spook stuff and, I have to admit, pretty cool. But that was like 25 years ago. But that how he identifies himself now. He’s the guy who….. Past tense. Gone. Over. Yeah memories and stories are fine but, come on, the past is where you’ve been; not where you are.
This guy hasn’t really made a choice in the last couple of decades. He hasn’t grown. He hasn’t learned new skills. He’s still living in his past.
I know way too many people like this guy. One in particular is caught in high school. Think of that for a moment. High school was super cool for this guy. And he hangs onto it for dear life; maybe literally. And, for him, high school was almost three decades ago. He’s done nothing substantive since and is now regretting it. Yet he doesn’t see that he still has opportunity ahead of him. Choices.
If you’re stuck in the past or fixated on something please don’t stand in that crap. Move. Make waves. Try something. Even a lousy choice is movement as long as you are moving ahead. That means learning about yourself and being who you are.
Please get yourself UNSTUCK!
